Tweedy At The Brown Theatre
Jeff Tweedy playing at the Brown Theatre was a perfect excuse for Miss Amy and I to have date night and feast at one of our favorites, Bluegrass Brewing Company. Before the waiter has a chance to ask us about drinks, Amy quickly blurts, "meade". Luna de Miel, BBC's raspberry meade is an Amy favorite. I was more intent on their BBQ Vegan Wings but quickly gather my alcoholic senses and ordered a Rollie Fingers, a session IPA. Now back to the house made sietan fried and smothered in bbq sauce. Delicious. I need to learn how to make this stuff at home. Along with another meade and bourbon brown ale came a BBQ sandwich for the Misses and the spinach burger for myself. Yes, I eat meat but tend to order on the veggie side when out and about, just add it to one of my many quirks.
BBC 4th Street
This was the third time Amy and I have seen Jeff Tweedy but first time solo, not as Wilco. Our previous Tweedy/Wilco experiences were outdoor festivals, 2012 Forecastle Festival in Louisville, KY and 2013 Americanarama Festival of Music in Cincinnati, OH. It was nice to get to see him in a more intimate venue like the Brown Theatre. I was not familiar with the opener, The Minus 5, but after hearing a few songs I knew I would be checking out their catalog. They did a great cover of the Who's "Can't Explain".
The first dozen or so songs of Tweedy's set were new songs from his upcoming album "Sukierae" that he recorded with his son, Spencer, on the drums. Then the band took a break while Tweedy play several well-loved Wilco tunes along with a few from the songbooks of Uncle Tupelo, Golden Smog and Loose Fur. Great show and his stage banter has to be some of the best out there, especially enjoyed his take on rocking out with a pick and having bass butt. Funny stuff. He finished the show unplugged, mic-less sing-a-long of "Misunderstood". Thanks to youtube user darkstarflashes for capturing the good time.
At the show I picked up the limited pressed Diamond Light 10" vinyl. Side A has “Diamond Light Pt. 1” from the upcoming "Sukierae" and the b-side has “Diamond Light Pt. II” (exclusive to the 10”). It has a locked groove on both sides which pretty cool and rare for a 10". Looking forward to rest of the album in September.
